A year ago an attempt to circumnavigate Svalbaard in kayaks ended in a near-fatal accident when a polar bear attacked and severely injuried one of the paddlers.

Starting from Longyearbyen Sebastian Plura Nilssen and Ludvig Fjeld in their heavily laden carbon/kevlar Seabird Expedition, had made it up to the northern tip of Svaalbard, roughly one third of the route, when the bear put an abrupt end to the adventure.
